Council Member Wants Trees Trimmed More Often
Friday, February 10, 2006

Strong storms have toppled big trees around the Valley. To help keep Fresno residents safer, there's now a push to trim the city's older trees more often.
Fresno City Council Member Larry Westerlund wants the city council to restore funding of up to $200,000, so older trees can be trimmed more often.
"My understanding is that the current trim cycle is about a 21 to 22 year trim cycle and that's just way too much," said Westerlund. "I'd love to get into the 9 to 10 year frame."
Westerlund says it is a matter of public safety, "In the last set of storms that came in over the New Year's weekend, there were three people that were killed in Northern California. And heaven forbid that that would be something to happen here
While the city trees are on a 20-year trim cycle, they will be trimmed if they pose a hazard — if they're leaning, diseased or dead.
If you would like to contact the city of Fresno to have a tree inspected, contact Public Works Department at 559-621-1492.
