Councilmember Calhoun to Propose the Creation of a Downtown Fresno Renaissance by Developing an Adaptive Building Reuse Ordinance to Renovate Vacant Buildings
09/12/2006

FRESNO, CA (September 12, 2006) Northwest District 2 Councilmember Brian Calhoun will hold a news Conference, Wednesday, September 13, at 3:00 PM at the southwest corner of Tulare and Fulton to present his “Building Renaissance” proposal for Downtown Fresno. The proposal – which he will present to Council on Tuesday, September 19th, at 2:45 PM – will direct City of Fresno staff to develop an Adaptive Building Reuse Ordinance for Downtown. City staff would return to Council by the end of the year with an ordinance that would include plans for accelerating a Downtown Renaissance through the renovation and reuse of vacant buildings.

The ordinance will be tailored for Fresno based on similar, successful ordinances in Denver, Los Angeles, Boston and New York City. The Adaptive Building Reuse Ordinance will reduce the sea of vacant buildings (almost 2 million square feet – the same amount of space as the former World Trade Center Towers) depressing growth in Downtown.

“Encouraging viable mixed use growth in Downtown is essential to realizing Fresno’s tremendous potential, assisting in creating a rebirth, a Renaissance for Downtown,” said Councilmember Calhoun.
