Investing In The Future At Fresno’s Chandler Executive Airport
09/14/2009

Mayor Ashley Swearengin, Councilmember Cynthia Sterling, Aviation Director Russell C. Widmar together with other dignitaries and distinguished guests will gather for a groundbreaking ceremony at Chandler Executive Airport on Monday, September 14, 2009 at 11:30 am.

The new construction of Taxiway H is the first step in preparing the north side of Chandler Executive for future aviation development. As the demand for general aviation facilities increase, developing airfield infrastructure prepares Chandler Executive to accommodate the increasing needs of existing operators as well as attract new operators to establish their businesses in downtown Fresno. Approximately $1.7 million in funding for the project is provided by FAA Airport Improvement Program (AIP) grants and the Measure C Regional Transportation program.

“This significant investment on Fresno’s West side is consistent with the City’s commitment to set the foundation for future economic growth opportunities,” Mayor Swearengin said. “With the projected growth of our population over the next 20 years, it’s important that we are prepared to accommodate the needs of our residents by making these infrastructure improvements at both of the City’s airports when the Federal funds are available.”

Chandler Airfield was dedicated for public use in November 1929 on 100 acres of farmland donated by Senator and Mrs. Wilber Chandler. The terminal building was restored to its 1930’s grandeur in 2008 and served as a setting for the movie Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Today, Chandler Executive plays a significant role within the national air transportation system as a reliever airport for Fresno Yosemite International Airport.
