FYI Continues to Rank Among Top Airport Performers
01/24/2008

Fresno, CA - As airports nationwide struggle to explore procedures to relieve existing air traffic congestions and flight delays, Fresno Yosemite International Airport’s on-time departure performance continues to rank amongst the top percentage of U.S. Airports. According to the Department of Transportation Air Travel Report for November, FYI experienced an 86.6% on-time departure rate for domestic flights. This on-time departure percentage places FYI as the 13th ranked Airport out of the top 100 U.S. Airports for on-time performance. November’s position reflects a progression in on-time performance for FYI since its previous 15th Airport ranking in October.

Furthermore, the report lists FYI on-time arrivals at 81.8%; positioning FYI in the top 35 ranking for on-time arrivals. The November report is based on data collected by the Department’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics.

While weather is a driving factor for delays, recent weather conditions have had minimal impact on FYI flight operations. In the event of extreme weather conditions, FYI is one of the few California airports with a Category III(b) Instrument Landing System. This sophisticated landing system provides aircraft with the ability to land in conditions of reduced visibility; thereby minimizing weather related delays. For instance, due to severe weather conditions in the Bay Area last month, the Airport’s all-weather landing capability allowed for over 20 unscheduled aircraft to divert to FYI.

Additionally, unlike Airports across the nation experiencing air space related delays, the lack of congested airspace at FYI allows for timely landings and take-offs.

Nine carriers currently offer Valley passengers 50 daily domestic and international departures from Fresno. FYI is a municipally owned entity operating as a self-supporting enterprise. No City of Fresno general funds are used to operate Fresno Yosemite International or Fresno Chandler Executive Airport.
