FYI Deploys State-of-the-Art Airport Rescue Protection
04/06/2007

On Friday, April 6 at 10:00 am at the Airport Cargo Ramp; Fresno Yosemite International Airport will unveil its latest addition of Airport Rescue protection – the Oshkosh Striker 3000 ARFF vehicle. The Aircraft Rescue Fire Fighting (ARFF) vehicle allows FYI to respond to airfield emergencies with state-of-the-art aircraft firefighting equipment and technology.

The ARFF vehicle is capable of accelerating up to 50 mph, which deems its performance comparable to the “Porsche “of fire vehicles. With a chassis designed for extreme mobility and solid stability, the ARFF vehicle is capable of maneuvering and performing on and off the airport runway. The 80 square feet of cabin glass provides an expansive view of the scene while an infrared camera enables crews to see through dense smoke and fog.

These fire suppressant materials are disbursed by high volume roof and bumper turrets controlled by Airport firefighters from the vehicle cabin. The Airport rescue unit, consisting of two trucks, is now capable of responding to airfield emergencies with a combined 6000 gallons of water and foam, and 1000 pounds of dry chemical capability combined, well exceeding Federal Aviation Administration standards for an airport this size.

“The new ARFF vehicle ensures Airport emergency response capabilities are supported by the highest levels of efficiency and safety for the airport public safety team,” stated Russell C. Widmar, Director of Aviation.

The $650,000 ARFF vehicle purchase was 95% funded through an Airport Improvement Program grant with a local Airport Revenues match of 5%.

Nine airlines currently offer Valley passengers 46 daily departures from Fresno. FYI is a municipally owned entity operating as a self-supporting enterprise. No City of Fresno general funds are used to operate Fresno Yosemite International or Fresno Chandler Executive Airport.
