 SMART Program Window Installation Examples:
Windows installed in homes in previous bid groups have been "two track" windows. The windows to be installed in this bid group and future bid groups will be "four track" windows. The four track windows are lighter, more readily available, made with standard glass, and come in vinyl, as well as, aluminum. The pictures below show four track windows installed in the San Jose and San Francisco project areas. This window is a four track window. |
This is a window showing the window in the partially open position. You can see the two panels. A two track window only has one panel to open. Different manufacturers use different styles or configurations of window components. The windows actually used may vary from this design. |

This window has decorative muntins applied to the glass as a surface application. Some manufacturers use insulated glass with the muntins between the panes of glass.
The program pays for the muntins for homes that have divided glass in the existing windows. |

The installation of the windows is similar in the San Jose project shown here as in Fresno. The old windows are removed leaving the original frame.
The new windows are removed from the packaging and prepared for installation. |
Glass panels are removed from the window and the frame is placed in the opening. Blocks are installed at attachment points and the window is secured in the in place with screws. Insulation is pushed into the gaps around around the frame. |

Trim is cut to fit the space and applied. The frame and sill are cleaned and then caulk is applied to finish the installation. In some cases touch-up painting is needed.
The window at the left shows and acoustic window in a stucco wall. |

The installations in San Jose and Millbrae demonstrate that the four track window can be an attractive and effective way to reduce aircraft noise in the home.
My thanks to Gordon Hugan, Program Coordinator, for the tour of the Millbrae program area. |
