Agreement Reached On Amtrak Depot

FRESNO , CA ( October 21, 2005) – The City of Fresno and Amtrak have agreed to lease terms that will allow the newly restored historic Santa Fe Depot to open to the public.

With the assistance of Congressman Jim Costa, an alternative funding source was identified to mitigate the $607,000 funding shortfall created by Amtrak’s non-payment. The funding was provided through a grant from Cal Trans and was approved by the California Transportation Commission on September 29, 2005.

“I am pleased that alternative funding was identified to allow the project to be completed on budget. The opening of this beautiful and historic facility has always been our prime objective. I understand the frustration of the riding public for the delay in opening, but hundreds of thousands of Fresno’s hard-earned tax payer dollars were saved by seeing this journey to its successful conclusion. I want to thank Congressman Costa for his assistance in seeing this project through to completion.” Mayor Autry stated.

The lease agreement was fully executed this morning, and it is anticipated that Amtrak will be opening in the new depot within the next few weeks.
