City Provides Two Levels Of Activation For Shelter From The Extreme Cold
As temperatures drop below the forty degree mark, the City of Fresno Parks, Recreation and Community Services division will continue to open and operate City Community Centers as Warming Centers for our homeless and indigent population.
Since November 30, 2006, the City has opened various Community Centers to provide warm shelter from the extreme cold temperatures for those living on the City streets. Since November 30, approximately 250 individuals have taken refuge in the City Warming Centers.
Working with the Fresno Rescue Mission and Poverello House, the City will continue to monitor the need for available warm shelter. Therefore, the City has adopted the following levels of service:
When overnight temperature predictions fall to 36 degrees:
- Frank H. Ball neighborhood gymnasium will open from 7:00p.m. to 7:00a.m.
- PRCS staff will provide transportation to and from the Fresno Rescue Mission, Poverello House and additional sites as determined where the homeless gather to the Warming Center.
When overnight temperature predictions fall to 32 degrees:
- Frank H. Ball and Ted C. Wills gymnasiums will be open from 7:00pm to 7:00am.
- PRCS staff will provide transportation to and from the Fresno Rescue Mission, Poverello House and additional sites as determined where the homeless gather.
The City asks that community members be the eyes and ears for those in need of shelter from extreme cold temperatures as indicated by calling 559.488.1502 when transportation is needed.
Frank H. Ball Community Center is located at 760 Mayor Avenue and Ted C. Wills Community Center is located at 770 N. San Pablo.
The Warming Centers will be activated when low temperatures dictate. The information will appear on the city web site at www.fresno.gov under the ‘Urgent News and Information’ header.
