Revised Winter Watering Schedule

The City of Fresno’s winter watering schedule has been revised to allow all customers to water any time on their scheduled watering day. This change has been made to allow for daylight watering in the winter months and still allows the City to be conservation minded because water evaporation is not an issue during the colder months. Mayor Swearengin commended the Water Division for taking the lead in responding to concerns in the community and providing residents with an option for daylight watering.

The winter watering schedule went into effect for all City of Fresno water customers on December 1, 2009. The schedule permits outside watering on the following days and times:

ODD Numbered Addresses:
(Addresses ending in 1, 3, 5, 7, 9)

EVEN Numbered Addresses:
(Addresses ending in 0, 2, 4, 6, 8)

Watering is permitted any time on the scheduled watering day

Water Division Manager Martin Querin stated, “Since evaporation is not as much of an issue during the winter months, the revised schedule will allow customers the convenience of watering any time during their scheduled watering day while maintaining enhanced irrigation efficiency.”

The winter watering schedule began on December 1 and runs through March 1 to avoid unnecessary over watering. As the weather cools and fog comes, there is little or no need for watering. If watering does become necessary, the City recommends irrigating approximately five minutes per station on the assigned watering day.

In addition to following the required watering schedule, customers should also set their automatic sprinkler times off the hour, such as 10:43 pm, 2:57 am or 4:26 am. The benefits of resetting sprinkler times are two-fold. First, it prevents sprinklers throughout the City from going on at the same time, which can decrease water pressure to individual customers. And second, it helps conserve energy by preventing the City’s pumps from continuously switching on and off instead of steady pumping. During rain events, remember to turn automatic sprinkler timers off or place them on pause mode.

Representatives from the Water Conservation are available to visit customers and show them how to reset a sprinkler timer and offer water efficient irrigation tips. Customers can call (559) 621-5480 to schedule an appointment.
