City Plans Bike Through (Ag) History September 29
FRESNO – The City of Fresno’s bi-annual “Bike Through History” will take on an “ag” theme this year at the event on Saturday, Sept. 29, starting at 9 a.m. The event will feature a 16-mile round-trip guided ride out along Kearney Boulevard to an optional picnic lunch at Kearney Mansion.
Bike Through (Ag) History is co-sponsored by the Fresno County Bicycle Coalition, the Fresno Historical Society and the CAL Alumni Club of Fresno.
The ride will begin at the 1894 Old Fresno Water Tower, 2444 Fresno St., and will detour through Chinatown and out historic Kearney Boulevard to Kearney Park. Stops along the way include the Art Deco-style Kearney Boulevard Gateway, the 1936-7 WPA Chandler Air Terminal, the c1910 Koligian Ranch and Tankhouse and the 1903 Kearney Mansion. At each stop, volunteer docents will provide brief overviews of the history of the site.
The Fresno Historical Society will offer free tours of the Mansion. Entry to Kearney Park for bicyclists also will be free; however, automobiles will be charged the normal $5 entrance fee to the park.
Participants are encouraged to dress in “tweeds” if they so desire. Tweed rides celebrate the golden age of bicycling in England and participants dress in the period of the 1920s.
For those wishing to purchase lunch, two box lunch options will be available for $10 (cash only) and may be purchased at the time of registration. The lunches will be delivered to the park. Participants may also bring their own lunch or consider stopping on the return trip at the Chandler Airport café.
The ride is intended for participants 12 and up (with 16 and under accompanied by a parent). Participants need to have a bike in good working condition and a helmet. The event is free, but pre-registration is strongly encouraged.
To register, volunteer for the event, or for more information, please contact Karana Hattersley-Drayton (Historic Preservation Project Manager) at 621-8520. The event is also posted through the City’s Facebook site at https://www.facebook.com/#!/events/241341415987880/.
